According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2006, the more education someone has (and thus the higher their income), the more likely they are to marry.
Factors that seem to influence this trend include:
– Higher income and more stability enforce the marriage.
– Personality traits that help one succeed in college also help a person stay in a long-term marriage.
– Educated people understand the benefits of marriage for children and family life.
However many people still see marriage as something negative: something that gets in the way of a career, something limiting. “We see it in America as something that tears you down more than building you up. We’ve lost the concept of a helpmate, and we see marriage now more as a burden and a bondage than we do as something that’s helpful and encouraging.”
